"Great Scott, a bonnie tuathanas."

Dear Friend,

August is an ideal time to slow down and look back on low-tech family farming "James Herriot" style in the Argyle Highlands.  Or you could speed up and look ahead to the latest high-tech updates.  It's all here in our "Great Scott" edition of FarmSmart.

  • Remembering the transformational mind of Danny Klinefelter.
  • BOOST/23 Ag Software Success Summit.

Remembering the Transformational Mind of Danny Klinefelter
Danny speaking at 2014 conference

Before there were Farm Financial Standards (FFS), TEPAP, or AAPEX, there existed the transformational mind of Dr. Danny Klinefelter.  Our first encounter with Danny was in1983 as we translated Coordinated Financial Statements for Agriculture (CFS) from paper forms into software.  The Farm Crisis of the 80s was raging and  Danny and Dr. Tom Frey from the University of Illinois responded by authoring a financial "cookbook" that converted cash-basis tax records and physical inventories into adjusted accrual analysis as well as documented the tie-out/coordination between financial statements.  Ten years later, this process was effectively adopted by the Farm Financial Standard Task Force (which became the FFS Council).

Watch Danny's presentation of "Twelve Things That 98 % of Ag Producers Don't Do" from the 2015 FBS User Conference.

No thought leader has transformed the business mindset of agriculture more than Danny.  Read his obituary here.

"Great Scott, Marty, It's A Time Machine!"

DOS to Windows

What if you could go back to DOS days to retrieve priceless historical accounting data?  If that data was recorded in FBS, and you locate the right vintage computer, employ an FBS-qualified "Doc" to supervise, and plug the flux capacitor into a 1.21 gigawatts power source, you might be able to pull it off.  Even if your copy of FBS is "slightly" dated we might be able to bring you back up to speed (maybe even 88 MPH?), but you need to act now while our time machine is still operating.  Contact sales@fbssystems.com.

Q&A: Malevolent Microsoft Update?

Q.  All of a sudden I'd receiving this weird error in FBS:  "MICROSOFT.ACE.OLEDB provider is not registered on the local machine"

Sarah 2019

Sarah Dixon, FBS Support Coordinator

A.  We think this is being triggered by a recent Microsoft update.  If you see this error the quickest way to fix this is to re-install our common components off of the downloaded installer or CD installer.

For example, the installer on the Version 11.8 CD is called "FBS_11.8.exe," so double-click on that file (or the file you have downloaded from the cloud).

Active X Controls

When the installation processes reach the screen that asks which components to install, uncheck everything except for the line at the very bottom for Active X Controls and proceed with the installation.  Then you should be good to go!
