UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL AT THE FBS USER CONFERENCE

It's been said that we only use 10% of our brains.  While that familiar axiom may be more myth than reality, we're 100% certain that most ag computer users are tapping only a fraction of their system's capability.  The result is wasted hours, days, even weeks and heightened frustration and stress.

Each year we incorporate hundreds of great user suggestions into our software, as well as update reporting to meet government and accounting requirements.  While it's not realistic to expect everyone to put every new idea into practice, astute managers recognize the necessity of staying in touch with the "big world," networking with peers outside their communities and never, never stopping learning and improving their processes.

That's the objective of the annual FBS User Conference.  Past attendees share their impressions:

"Great opportunity for networking.  New ideas from other user on handling certain transactions."

"My second year attending.  I felt this year was more interesting and productive, maybe due to my increased experience with FBS.  More people / users need to attend, especially on the production side."

"Overall a good seminar with a lot of good information.  Good contacts to talk with about what they are doing and how they are utilizing the software."

"Good place to meet and talk with people about how they are doing things and implement in your own business."

"Come for the training and networking."

This year we're building on a solid tradition with our 12th annual conference by offering ideas all users and their accountants/consultants can put into practice:

•   Overview of recent and coming program improvements
•   "Things you never knew your software could do," Part III
•   Demonstration of new technologies for gathering data in the field and feedlot
•   A consultant panel share their tips for standardizing and streamlining setup, procedures and reporting
•   An opportunity to view budgeting practices in other industries and provide input for development of ag budgeting tools
•   Ask our support staff your most perplexing questions
•   Learn how to validate and mine knowledge from your data
•   Delve into interactive managerial accounting case studies from cutting-edge crop and livestock operations
•   Relax and network on a Mississippi River dinner cruise

Big wheel keeps on turnin'...
... FBS users keep on learnin'.

We don't expect everyone attending the FBS User Conference to immediately apply all the ideas we'll cover.  But we do guarantee that all attendees will receive at least one idea worth the price of admission, and your brain will be "stretched" to capacity sometime during the two day seminar.

User Conference.2005 will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26, in Moline, Illinois.  The early registration deadline is Thursday, August 18th.  For a full agenda and registration information, click on this link.

25 YEARS AGO / 25% OFF TRIVIA QUIZ...

Software prices have changed since we started business 25 years ago.  Our first product, Commercial Pork Package, originally sold for $250.00.  Even though there were a lot more pork producers then than now, few of them owned a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I with a cassette tape drive to run the program.

Our first "big" seller didn't take off until floppy disks became widely available in 1981.  We'll award 25% off any FBS module to the first person submitting the name of the program, what it did and its retail price.

Send your answers to norm@fbssystems.com.  We'll announce the correct answer and winner and introduce a new 25-year-trivia question next month.

SOFTWARE Q&A – WITH Q'S FROM YOU, OUR CLIENTS!

Send us your questions/problems–be they short, long, simple or downright frustratin'!–about SeRVware and we'll handle them right "on the air" for the benefit of all.

Q.

Last year I prepaid seed for this spring. Now I am ready to enter my plantings on the computer.  How do I begin?
a.   1.   First determine if the prepaid seed purchase:
  a.   Was placed in the Crop Audit seed inventory at the time of purchase ("linked" account)
  b.   Was recorded through an "unlinked" expense account
  c.   Was recorded through an "unlinked" prepaid asset account
  d.   Or was expensed through a linked account, then "reversed" into an asset account (e.CLIPSE automatically does this)
  2.   If a) or d) above are true, then determine if the seed varieties delivered match the varieties that were prepaid.  If they do, then go directly to 5).
  3.   If the dollar value is the same, but the varieties have changed make the following Management journal entry.
  a.   Use your linked seed expense account for both sides of the transaction.
  b.   Reverse out (credit / negative quantities and dollars) the original varieties.
  c.   Use a standard expense entry (debit / positive quantities and dollars) for the new varieties.
  d.   When you're done the journal entry should balance.  Go directly to 5.
  4.   If 1.-b. or 1.-c. are true then record this Management journal entry:
  a.   Reverse out (credit) the original expense or asset account
  b.   Offset to the linked seed expense account (debit / positive quantities and dollars) for the new varieties.
  c.   When you're done the journal entry should balance.  Continue with 5.
  5.   Apply the seed through either the Crop Input | General Input | Plant Seed or Crop Input | Input by Center/Field.  The correct quantity and value will be automatically pulled from inventory
  6.   Use the Crop Input | Global Adjustment to "zero out" seed inventories that were over-planted or under-planted by the program.
TIP:  If you're unsure of the actual application rate on a field-by-field basis, then divide the purchased quantity by total planted acres to determine the average pounds, bags, etc. planted per acre.  Save the first application as a macro under Input by Center/Field and use it for the rate/acre on the remaining fields.  This same principle also applies to prepaid chemicals, fertilizer and custom applications.
